On SatAadhAnam

Kalasapudi Srinivasa Rao posed a set of four questions, up for discussion.
Nobody having followed it up, this is an attempt to encourage discussion
of them. I am not sure that we can come up with "answers" to them, but
since when did that prevent discussion?

Briefly, the questions are:

	1. Was the SatAvadhAnam enough of a challenge to the avadhAni?
	2. Is this meant to show that a SatAvadhAnam can be done in a day?
	3. There were SatAvadhAnams conducted long ago in much shorter time.
	4. A two-three day SatAvadhAnam, as is usually the case, would give
the avadhAni the chance to consult a dictionary, other, so on.
It seems there were times when the avadhAni was detained in
some place to prevent this. ......

My personal (Bapa Rao permitting) views.....

1. It did not look like much of a challenge for the avadhAni that day.
However, many of the varNana and ASuvu questions (with the hurried-up
format that day, there was no difference between these two categories,
and to a large extent between these two and praSnaku-pATa category -
after all, it too asked for some kind of a "description" of a
situation, except in a song format) were of a pedestrian nature.
However, there were a few times when the avadhAni rose to the occasion,
(or rose above the o) and did more than was nominally asked for. It
also seemed that he had some reserve capacity, and that he could have
   handled a bit tougher questions.

2. Especially in this country, gathering a decent sized audience for two
days is a practical impossibility. On the other hand, what credentials
do I have to make that assertion! Many of us did not expect the event
to the success it was, both in the quality of the event and the crowd
size, and the patience with which many stayed for the duration.
Thus, perhaps only one-day SatAvadhAnams could be expected to be staged.
I do think that the event was conducted very smoothly, with not too
much waste of time (some speeches could and should be curtailed). I
think it had a nice balance of the questions and avadhAni's excursions
into related matters - which make the avadhAnam such a pleasure.

3. For the sake of of a "record" perhaps they can be conducted in a minimum
amount of time. I would think that such events would be very uninteresting.
Those that have witnessed such performances, please elaborate.

4. In the times of Kings and Zamindars, such antics as keeping the poor avadhAni in a cell overnight may have taken place. In these times I don't think so.
That is another reason for concluding the event in a day. Witness the
growing popularity of limited-overs Cricket matches that last just one day.
On the other hand, even if a SatAvadhAnam took place over two or three
days, why not handle the questions of the first day on the first day, and
   and so on?
