Continuing the rasa dhAra of SrI nAga PaNi Sarma gAru, after he played with
the idea of English, telugu embedded samasyas, now comes a beautiful telugu
samasya -- I bet you find the real beauty of it ONLY after reading the pUraNa.
"kALLaku kanDlu vaccenanagA mari rAtiki kALLu vacceDin.."
Yes, I guess this might be a standard samasya but the avadhAni's poem has
the 'nAgaPaNi mudra' again with a lot of karuNa rasam(this avadhAni's
speciality, may be).. and behold, this was one of avadhAni's favorite
samasyas in this avadhAnam --
"tRLLina kOrketO vayasu tondara dontara lO gatince nA
treLLina jIvitambu BavadIya padambidi sOkagA praBU,
BaLLuna tella vArinadi pApamu SApamu vOye rAma nI
kALLaku kanDlu vaccenanagA mari rAtiki kALLu vacceDin.."
The word play "tondara - dontara", "pApamu - SApamu" enhancing the beauty of
the poem is this avadhAni's special. yI avadhAna SirOmaNi gAri padyAlalO
iTuvanTi SabdAlankAra BUshaNAlennO... and our avadhAni gAru was recollecting
one of his previous samasyA-pUraNams on --
"nETiki rAma darSanamu nIvalenan laBiyince mAku yA
hATaka garBa lEkhanamulandamulai Paliyince mA yeDan
cETunu pondi gUDa raGu sEvana BAgyamu nilcinAvu O
tATaka pUjyurAlavani tApasu lellaru kolcirayyeDan.."
Does that 'hATaka garBu lEkhanamulu..." remind you of pOtana gAri usage of
"kATuka kanTi nIru canukaTTu payimbaDa yElanEDcedO
hATaka garBu rANi, kaiTaBa daitya mardanuni gAdili kODala...."
One avadhAni is the pRchchaka in the avadhAnam of another avadhAni - No, I'm
not framing a samasya here myself, but this is what left a couple of memorable
scenes at this avadhAnam when SrI jagadISwaran(himself an avadhAni) asked
Sarma gAru to explain "Sankaruni varince sIta janakuni yeduTan..'
"SankAtankamulElA
sankalpita rIti dhanuvu SatadhA virigen,
swAnkitu rAmuni lOkava
Sankaruni varince sIta janakuni yeduTan.."
Our Vissa gAri samasya - "agjnAnammE goppadanenu gjnAnamu kanTen.." was
completed on a philosophical note as --
"nEnani, nIvani, vADani
dEniki yI BEdaminka, dhRti cirutalalO,
pUnaga pasitanamuna na
gjnAnammE goppadanenu gjnAnamu kanTen.."
P'bably Sarma gAru was giving the first lesson in child psychology but most
of the audience by this time were nodding their heads refusing to come back
from the 'sAhitI world' which our avadhAni gAru took us to with his
literary exuberation and melifluous enchanting.. Most of us were re-collecting
the words of 'karuNaSrI jandhyAla pApayya SAstri gAru'. While explaining
how 'manci kavitvam' should be he said -- 'cinni pApalu talalUcinaTlu,
tella malliya pUcinaTlu, manasu nUyalalUcinaTlu..." etc..., Yes that's
exactly what our status was at that instance.
Sarma gAru moved onto samskRta samasyalu continuing his Sabda vinyAsam
and pada vaicitri...
The samasya was -- 'rAvE rAvE rasamaya kaLA rAgadE ramya kRshNA...' and the
avadhAni was asked to complete it in either telugu or Sanskrit... As our
KumAr vaDaparti gAru said, the avadhAni took the professional route - by
completing it in Sanskrit, after transforming the meaning of simple telugu
sounding 'rAvE rAvE' to 'rAvE rAvE' (ravamu = Sabdamu in Skt) in Sanskrit.
This poem is woven around the situation of BImasEna coming back singing the
song of victory after killing duSSAsana as per his BIshaNa pratigjna --
"dushTam dushTam durita Baritam dussa sEnum hi hatvA
krUram ghOram ghana kurupatE rUruBangam ca kRtvA
BImO BIma: vijaya ninada sstat satImEtya tasmin
rAvE rAvE rasamaya kaLA rAgadE ramya kRshNA.."
Does it remind you of 'kaScit kAntA viraha guruNA.. swAdhikArA pramatta:
SApEnAstE gamita mahimA....' of kALidAsuni mEgha
sandESa mahA kAvyam ?? Wait for the next one on,
"mA satI mAna cOra:' --> lakshmI mAna(sa) cOra: = vishNuvu ??
This piece, as it is we do not see any samasya in this partial pAdam of a
SlOkam. But lemme give you the text of the SlOkam of what he gave followed by
its explanation...
"kOsA dagdha: giriSa viBunA mAnasasyA parOrtha:
tIrasyaivam vacana mathakim pumsi, kOsA SivArhi:
ka: karNAri: kathamatha hari: gOkula SrInivAsE
lakshmInAtha: katha mapi hari: mAsatI mAna cOra:"
The individual letters 'mA sa tI mA na cO ra:' of the samasya have a special
property here -- Leave alone looking INTO the samasya, many of us in the
audience could not even understand the samasya in the way intended --
The samasya is making use of these individual letters and the camatkAram is in
combining the letters.. The poem when read should convey the meanings/vyutpatti
arthamulu for each and every word made by combining the individual letters of
the samasya itself in a particular pattern... Here you go --
kOsA dagdha: giriSa viBunA - SivuDnicE hatuDevvaDu ??
- Ans : 'mAra:' manmathuDu (1+7 letters of
mAsatI mAna cOra:
mAnasasyA parOrtha: - manasa: anE mATaki maroka artham ??
- 'sara:' (2+7 letters of the samasya)
tIrasyaivam vacanm atha kim pumsi - pumlingamu lO tIram anE padam ??
- tIra: (3+7 letters)
kOsA SivArhi : - Sivuni SatRuvevvaDu ?? - mAr: (4+7 letters)
ka: karNAri: - karNuni SatruvevvaDu - 'nara:' - arjunuDu (5+7)
katham atha har: gOkula SrInivAsE - gOkulamunandu hari(kRshNuDu)
eTlunDe ??
cOra: = donga vale (6+7 letters)
and now lakshmInAtha: katha mapi hari: - hari(vishNuvu) yeTlu lakshmI
- nAthuDayye - Ans:'mA satI mAna cOra:'
- lakshmI mAna(sa) cOruDai...
adI avadhAni gAri pada lAsyamU, Sabda vaidushyamUnU.. So, oka vidhamgA yI
avadhAna saBA prAngaNam akkaDaku cErina cAlA mandiki adhyana kEndram gA
mArindanTE atiSayOkti kAdu...
Last two samasyalu I'd like to talk about in this post are about 'gaDDAlu
and mIsAlu', before I move onto 'datta padulu' in the next part.
"ramBaku mUtipai molice ramyua navAnkura rIti mIsamul.."
and "gaDDamu cEsikommanucu kAntuDu kAntaku ceppe navvucOn.."
"kumBini sarva dAnavula kUlici vaccenu vajrapANi sO
ktamBita dhIvilAsuDani tattaragA saBakEga nenci sam
ramBamu tODa kATukanu rAse mukhammuna, mUti paina, nA
ramBaku mUtipai molice ramyua navAnkura rIti mIsamul.."
telling us the story of 'ramBa' in a hurry to meet indra..
"aDDamu diDDamETiki, anniTan, palumATalETokO,
yeDDemaTanna teDDemaTannu yIgati ceppa galADananna tAn
biDDala nIvunai kanmu penmiTi anna tadIya BAryakun
gaDDamu cEsikommanucu kAntuDu kAntaku ceppe navvucOn.."
explaining about a 'BAryA Bartala savAl'... I still remember SrI kASInAthuni
mahESwara prasAd's comments on how a pRchchaka's question in an avadhAnam is
supposed to be -- he said that it should be asked with "jigjnAsa" (a sincere
inquisitive urge) and not with "jigIsha" (to show oneself up, or to catch the
avadhAni on a wrong foot). When you have the jigjnAsa pUrita questions
floating around, rest assured you can always expect the show to be a
vigjnAna suSOBitam and that's what it was during those 15 hrs of literary
feast. Any way, 'yathA samasyA tathA pUraNam, datta padulatO maLLI
kaluddAm'...
