ikkaDa SivEtarulantE sadAcArulu kAni vArani anukOvacca?

nAkardhamainantavarakU
kAvya prayOjanam has been defined as:

1. To earn fame (yaSase)
2. To earn money (artha kRtE)
3. To communicate day to day matters (vyavahAra vidE)
4. To defeat scoundrels (?) (SivEtarakshatayE)
5. sadyh para nirvRtayE (nAkardham kAledu)
6. To teach the wife and kids (?) (kAntA-sammita-tayOpadESayujE)

All I said was that the poet should first decide why he is writing (any or all
of the above reasons), who does HE WANT to reach (there may be any number of
unintended recipients of his message, but he certainly must have a particular
audience in mind) and then ensure that his work reaches this intended audience
with minimum loss of the force that caused it to come out in the first place. Is
this too much to ask?

marO sAri manavi cEsukuntunnAnu -

I am not suggesting that clarity is a substitute for quality.

I am not suggesting that respecting the audience means "araTi panDu valici
cEtilO peTTaDam".

I am not suggesting that a poet should first declare in bold type his intentions
and his objectives (I can vouch for the fact that this can be quite irritating
to the reader).

I am, however, suggesting the following:

1. pAnDitya prakarSha is B A D. Any attempt at advertising one's erudition at
the cost of communication spells bad poetry. Actually, my post started as a
reaction to the definition "vidvat kavay@h kavay@h". If vidvat alienates you
from your audience, i for one would rather have a "mediocre" poet doing a half
job than a Keats singing in the desert to himself.

2. kavitva paramAvadhi manishini kita kitalu peTTaDam mAtramE kAdu - mAtallO
ceppanalavi kAni BhAvAlni mAtallOnE ceppa galgaDam.

Regards,

Uday "nA jhagaDA ChAndasulatO mAtramE kAdanE" Bhaskar
