Back in the early eighties, Vasireddy Seetadevi wrote a novel called
mareechika. From a literary point of view, there is nothing very
remarakable about the novel. It is a story of two frustrated men.
One of them becomes a drug addict, while the other one becomes a
naxalite. Ultimately, both of them die. The only reason I read it that
time was because it was banned. In general, banning a book is a
foolish thing to do, as it only makes the book more popular. But
bureaucrats and politicians don't always act wisely. Why would
they ban a movie like 'aandhi'?
