Of late, there has a been lot of discussion on
this topic. Here's my recent observation (or doubt
?).

After a long time, recently, I got an opportunity
to watch one, that too 1,116 avadhaanam. Some of
you may be aware, it was organized in Hyderabad
from Feb 1-24. Avadhani was maaDugula naagaphaNi
Sarma.

When I went to see it, I did not find all the
1,116 pRchchakulu there. (The hall was big enough
to accommodate 10,000 people and there were mobile
mikes.) Sometimes, some pRchchakulu were absent
when their name was called out.

That made me wonder, is it really a
mahAsahasrAvadhAnam !! How come the avadhAni is
not concurrently dealing with 1,116 tasks ? The
task seemed to have been broken down into several
sub-tasks (ashTaavadhaanams). Is it merely a
gimmick to attract people by making the number too
big (in these days of people indifference to
langauge) ?

This is not a comment on the literary content.
BTW, there were some good poems and varNana songs.
(dont ask me what they were, because my dhaara is
not so great).

By avadhaanam, I understand it as a concurrent
job. Unlike ashTaavadhaanam, this
mahAsahasrAvadhAnam does not appear to be so. Can
somebody please clarify ?
