On further thinking about the dommaraaTa comparison, I have to
say that tirupati venkaTa kavulu used it as a derogatory comparison
(besides the poem cited by maadhav turumeLLa, there is another more
explicit poem of that ilk. I will look it up later). Even Srisri's
purpose in comparing avadhaanam with dommaraaTa and circus is to put down
avadhaanam as 'mere' mental acrobatics. Obviously in Srisri and tirupati
venkaTa kavulu were of the opinion, that 'pure' poetry was above these
'entertainment' oriented shows.
