Jampaala's article doesn't hurt any sacred cow. Sadananda in his reply has
made some points. He of coursed slipped when he said Tenali has written the
"paarijaataapaharaNam". Tenali's work is "paanDuraNga mahaatmyam". It is
Nandi Timmana who wrote the paarijaataapaharaNam.
Writing a poem, if people excuse me, is an easy thing. It is not the metre,
it is the language ( i.e., percentage of sanskrit to telugu or usage of
obscure or tough words etc. ) which impart any beauty or quality to the poem.
Here, the poet's ability to convay his message or point in style his sole
ability to please the readers who can feel the subtle beauty of the expression
of poem only counts.
In a complete work, a poet has time and space to express his story and message
in style. In a literary sport like avadhanam, the poet has to make a poem which
fits in to the imposed conditions - and make it as pleasing as possible. He
seldom has chance to show his calibre in full as a poet. He is more of a poem
crafter.
Yet, a very capable poet, when doing these sports comes up often with literary
quality poems. Example are tirupati-venkata kavulu.
One more thing is that it does need a great "paanDityam" to be a poet -and
applies same to be a avadhaani.
For the same reasons, chitra and bandhya kavitvam also enjoy less respect as
literary works.
