anushTup-anTE gurtukoccindi. I told this in an off-the net mail to Sreenivas,
but never posted it.
anushTup came about as an extemporaneous new meter (at least that's what
some of us believe) from vAlmeeki, when he saw a hunter shoot one of a pair
of krounca-birds. Sree pATibanDa mAdhava Sarma, in his book (the result of
a PhD thesis) "Andhra mahA bhAratamu : chandah-Silpamu" recounts a story
about bAlAntrapu rajaneekAnta rAvu. It seems BRR found out that the cry of
the krounca-bird has the notes "ma, ni, sa, da", which we find as the first
four syllables in the famous anushTup.
