Sorry to disagree. Any change in the structure of the word is not
mandated by dictators of any persuasion, let alone of chandas. This
claim is merelya distraction; a straw-argument. For example, any
chandas that can fit a "vElUri" can fit "Elooru" with equal ease. I
could have easily said:
okacO Deryanu pouruDaina mana vEloorin samardhincedan
or oka ElUru purasthuDaina ghana vEloorin ....
(it is not my intention to drag chandas into discussion here, but ...)
take an utpala/campaka-mAla. Write out the sequence of UI's. Not a
single-UU there! How do you fit an "Elooru" or "vEloori" there? (yes,
you can. left for inquiring minds as an exercise. It is not that
difficult to figure out) One would think that a "vEloori" would
fit appropriately, only into a SArdUlam!
Eloor-paTTaNa-chief-promoter-u kadA! vEloori vee. rAv-anan!
"promoter"-nu ajantam cEsAnu. Insult-ani engleeshu vALLAnukunTArEmO!
On the other hand, neither of the words would at any cost fit into the
sama-pAdas of an ATa-veladi. (One reason why vEmana may have shied away
from any mention of Elooru). But an "Erla vooru" would. So chandas can
handle "Erla vooru/Erlooru/Eluru/hElApuri", with equal ease. monna
evaritOnO, "Eloorannadi Erla vooru, telusA! hElA kurangEkshaNA!" anTE,

I am saddened by this egregious attack on sanskrit. I don't know why a
change from Erla-vooru to Erlooru and then to Elooru is "not too bad",
the perpetrators dismissed as "illiterate", "doralu", whereas the
hElApuri is considered a "forcible change", and the perpetrators of it
"Sanskrit zealots". How is this change "forced"? Is it written on
railway station boards? On city municipal buildings? Does anyone, other
than in a SPDCB poem refer to it as that? (Not that in a poem you have
to refer to it in that way) Who cares? So, where is this "force" felt?
By whom? Would vElUri start a petition to change the name back to "Erla
vooru", a la mumbai, and cennai?
> succumbed to the prosodaical prescriptions and called it hEla puri,
prosody forces neither of the alternatives. In a poet (unlike adiyan)
with a "vipula taramaina bhAshA nipuNata", none of the words pose any
difficulty. avadhAnis make even foreign language words fit neatly into
high prosody. One can refer to the posts subsequent to last year's
SatAvadhAnam (Sep'96).

Could I have the name of the first town to put-down SreeSree, so that I
can now go after (insulting) them? To achieve some balance?
Should I send a letter of apology to the city fathers (and mothers) of
Darien, Illinois (pop 20287, inc. 1969) saying that I changed its name
to "Daryan" (out of sheer ignorance) in SPDCB-poem, instead of "Deryan
or DEryan". Should this be addressed to Honble. Ms. Carmen Soldato?
I am at a loss to find the insult here, whether real or imagined. How
is "hEla puri" an insult, and "Erla puri" not! "puri" samskRtamE kadA!

How about "SamskRtampu TaDavi dirugu Enugu kivi sankeLLu

he felt insulted by the touch of these chAndasas. kavitA kanyaka

While I had some "anumAnam" about my previous post, I have none about
this. This is clearly an irrelevant post, better sent as a personal
mail. There wouldn't be any more on this topic from my part, period
