namastE !
A pretty good topic indeed ... ! Thanks Ramarao garu for the nice history of
telugu naaTakaalu.
I like reading kanyaaSulkam even now. But how many of us here in telusaa would
READ a modern naaTakam particularly if there are the alternatives of reading
a modern novel or poetry ?! My point is what makes for a good readable naaTakam ?!
What are the qualities of a naaTakam (I will not venture into the differences
between naaTika and naaTakam) and how much should it cater to the reader and
how much to the actors/directors/producers ?
(I will be very surprised if there isnt atleast one reply to this that will
quote the alankaara Saastram ... I dont know if they can be applied to the
modern drama)
Let me try and guess at the answer to a few of these questions:
1. The story has to be told in terms of incidents and dialogues (or soliloquies :)).
2. There has to be some description of the scenario (to "tie-to-the-readers'-eyes"
:-) the physical situation in which the incidents are taking place)
3. There also will be some descriptions of the actions of the characters
4. The emphasis will be on bringing out the 'rasa' of the story through the
dialogues. And since unlike in the other literary modes the author cannot
present the story in the third person to any great length, he/she has to
write the conversation between characters with greater care.
Can we have some enlightenment on this topic, with examples, if you please ,
from any modern telugu drama ?!
Hoping to hear more on this topic,
Sankaram
