In SreeSree's upanyaasaalu, there is one lecture (I think it was
the Chicago meet in aarekapooDi baapu's house; werent' you there vEloori
gaaroo?) where he suggested using Roman script for Telugu for about the
same reasons that juvvaDi ramaNa mentioned.
In one of abboori varada_raajESwara raavu's books, he laments that
Telugu will never be a world class language unless it becomes a portal for
knowledge (as Sanskrit and Latin were and English now is). I suppose one
can substitute economic gain for knowledge in that lament.
Two years ago in Madras, I met MBS prasaad (rachana readers know
him as the author of achalapati series; baapu-ramaNa fans may know him
from his editorship of bommaa-borusu) who was making some efforts to
teach Telugu to Telugu kids being raised in Madras. He too came to the
conclusion that Roman script would make it easier for these kids to learn
Telugu. He proposed a scheme similar to RIT.
When I started using the rachana word processor, one of my raised
outside Andhra Telugu friends, was so thrilled to see that phonetic Roman
script can be used to read and write Telugu.
What I am saying is that there may be some merit to what
ramaNagaaru suggested. A serious discussion is warranted.
