>>>I think since 4 kAnulu = 1 aNA, and 1 kAni = 3 paisalu. To rationalize
>>>the whole thing, the govt. after independence introduced the metric
>>>system and called the lowest denomination a 'nayaa' paisa (meaning new
>>>paisa).

>>>Evidently, there was another layer of currency denomination in the
>>>olden days called 'Dabbu'. I don't exactly remember its relation
>>>to an aNA, but it is more than a kAni. In fact, there is a telugu
>>>saameta "EgAnI vedhavaki Dabbunnara kshavaram", used to deride a
>>>person who is spending (or is forced to spend) way above his means.

The proverb I read and told by my grandfather was
" EgAnI vedhavaki dammiDi kshavaram"

  The denominations told by my grandfather, if I remember them correctly
, yes because he told when he was teaching me pedda bAlaSiksha (Most of
new convent educated people may not know about this ) and after getting
involved in new technologies and new culture (believed to be better than
our telugu traditions!!!!). How many of present parents teach their children
ciTTI cilakammA amma koTTindA.... than "Johny!! Johny !! Yes Papa!!!"...
Ok, leave this topic since it's a different discussion topic altogether...

Comming back to our currency denominations....

    3 paisa --> kANi
    2 kANi  --> aNa
    3 kANi  --> dammiDi
    4 kaNi (2aNa) --> bEDa
    2 bEDa(4 aNa) --> pAvala (1/4 rupee) and like that goes on...

   If I am wrong here someone may correct me.

thanks,
Ravi
