Language reflects attitudes. The reverse (modifying language) is
based on the theory that doing so will provide the sensitivity to
alter those attitudes. For example, using "policeman" will condition
people to always expect a man in role; using "police officer" in
its place (as it is done nowadays in the US) reflects a recognition
that either a man or a woman can do that job.
