Was this actually done? (listing Buddha among Vedic gods as opposed to
among one of the alternative Dasaavataara lists which are generally not
related to vedic gods)
In any case, it would applear that incorporating Buddha as an avataaram
might be the product (in part) of political accommodation with the
Buddhists. This sort of myth-creation and manipulation is pretty
standard stuff in all times, places and political ideologies, from
puraaNaas to Pravda and modern advertising. There is nothing innately
great or evil about the process itself, which is as old as civilized
society, I would imagine.
