Your friend made a mistake in understanding "Advaita".

Sorry, there is a lot of difference between "advaitam" and "nAstikatwam"
A) In "advaitam" your essential nature is GOD i.e. you are God. You are
creating this
world by opening *your* eyes/sense organs (brahma), you are sustaining it by
watching it
and participating in it (vishnu), you are destroying it by closing your
eyes/sense organs (rudra).
B) nAstikatwam (nihilism) teaches that you are also not there. Nothing is
existing
neither you nor God. I remember a Sanskrit verse about Nastikatvam/CArvAkaM.
"maraNAnaMtaraM mRUta SareeraM kuta AyAtaH
yAvajeevEt sukhaM jeevEt ruNaM kRUtvA ghrutaM pibEt"
A corpse can never come alive (means who is going to ask you after you are
dead!)
Hence, as long as you live, live happily. Loan money and enjoy. :-)
