Bapa Rao gAru, there are two meanings given for 'troll' in Webster's
Collegiate:
i) a term in music which the nighantuvu translates as 'pallavi', and ii)
a fabled dwarf or giant in Teutonic (i.e Germanic or Celtic folklore who
inhabits hills or caves. I think it is the second meaning you refer to.
I would be interested in finding out how the connotation of grotesque
got associated
with trolls. Any trolls in Tolkien's works? Well, telugu equivalent is
tough;
how do we connect to, say the Nibelung myth? Anyway, how about marugujju
with some kind of mantrasakti for the dwarf aspect, and,
asura/daitya/dAnava/rAkshasa
if giant? Basically a monster.
with a YOWL,
Som.
