sa.ra.dA.lO raMgavalli

Introduction

sa.ra.dA. (samAcAra rahadAri) lO raMgavalli is a Netscape-Composer
Plugin that converts transliterated telugu text in web-pages/e-mail
messages into
tikkana fonts. It allows the end user to highlight transliterated
portions of a web page and convert it to tikkana fonts instantly. This
is useful for reading all
web pages that are lying out there with transliterated text. If one is
also using the browser as an e-mail reader (e.g. Yahoo or Hotmail),
great, one can now
read his/her e-mail in telugu using tikkana fonts.

Requirements

a) Netscape Communicator 4.04 or later that comes with Netscape Page
Composer: This can be freely downloaded from
http://home.netscape.com/free.html

b) tikkana Fonts: These are available for Windows NT/95 for now. For
X-Windows, contact SrI juvvAdi ramaNa, who rehashed popular Potana fonts
of
SrI tirumalakRshNa dESikAcAry for technical reasons.

Installation for Windows 95/NT

Download sa.ra.dA.lO raMgavalli as a zip file from
http://acm7.me.uiuc.edu/~prasad/Rangavalli/saradA.zip
Using WinZip (freely available from http://www.winzip.com), extract
the following files from saradA.zip into a temporary folder
          cpsaradA.jar
          tikkana_.ttf
          README.html
Install tikkana fonts: Cilck on Windows "Start" Menu, first choose
"Settings" and then "Control Panel". In the control panel, double click
on "Fonts"
to open the Fonts panel. Now choose "Install New Font" in "File"
Menu and choose the directory into which you have extracted tikkana_.ttf
in the
step above. You should now see "Tikkana (True Type)" in the list of
fonts. Select it and click OK. You should now have tikkana fonts
installed on
your system. To verify, open WORD/WordPad or any other editor and
look to see if tikkana appears as one of the fonts that you can choose.
Copy cpsaradA.jar to your Netscape PlugIns folder. If you have used
the defaults while installing Netscape, this should be
     C:\Program Files\Netscape\Communicator\Program\Plugins
     Restart Netscape.

Instructions for Use

Load the web page you wish to see into Netscape Communicator
If you find some telugu text transliterated using modified (see
below) Rice Transliteration Scheme(RTS) , click on "Edit Page" or "Edit
Frame" in
Netscape Communicator's File Menu. This will open the web page for
editing in Netscape Composer.
Alternatively, click on "Page Composer" in the "Communictor"
Menu to first open Composer. Then, use Ctrl+O or "Open Page" in "File"
Menu and give the address of the page you wish to see and
edit.
In case you want to make a page rather than visit one, just
open Page Composer as explained above and type transliterated text.
Once the page is loaded into the composer, highlight transliterated
text that you wish to convert to tikkana fonts.
Click on "Tools" Menu and select "sa.ra.dA.lO raMgavalli" under
"Transliteration" Menu.
You should now be seeing the highlighted text in tikkana fonts.
You can change the size of the fonts by highlighting the text and
setting a new font
     size in the composer.
If the web page you visited is simple in layout, you may be finsih
here itself. But if it is cluttered up by detail, click on "Preview" in
the Composer
Toolbar and follow instructions to see the page in the Netscape
Communicator browser window. However, to do this, you will first need to
save the
     page in a temporary file.

Differences with RTS

sunna can only be obtained with M e.g. gAMdhi would work, gAndhi
wouldn't.
Bcos of unicode treating ksha as k with sha vottu, x is no longer
considered as ksh
      No telugu digits.
