This is a book notice of Surabhi Peddabaalas'ikSa, just out. Author: BuDDiga

Barkatpura, Hyderabad 500 0227.Pp.400. Price: Rs. 49.99.
An enlarged and updated version of Peddabaalas'ikSa of 1832, with little
resemblance to the original. Encyclopedic in nature particularly
designed for Telugu mother-tongue persons (you will know the names of Telugu
months, seasons and years). There are several mistakes and misstatements but
still I recommend it to all Telugu-knowing people abroad (and also in
India).It represents a sincere effort and research on the part of Subbarayan
for over 30 years. He has been associated with the The Telugu Encyclopaedia
of the Telugu bhaaSaa samiti, has prepared a children's encyclopedia, and
now this one. The price is cheap but not the contents. It has six divisions
or parts which he calls piiThamulu: Language, Culture, Childrens'
literature, Literature, Science and General Knowledge. Except for the last
two, the rest of the divisions address Telugu only. Under 4
:saahityapiiTham, Subbarayan devotes 12 pages for listing, with one or two
lines of introduction, Telugu lumanaries down the ages (11th cent.
onwards).Highly selective. Almost all entries are of those who are not
living, except for two: Arudra, Ci.Naa.Re. Arudra wrote the foreword, a good
reason to include him. The reason for including the second must be his
visibility in the media, of course beside his other accomplishements. Under
Part I, BhaaSaapiiTham, some guidelines on how to write in Modern Telugu are
given.
I wholeheartedly recommend this book to all members of the forum, for the
enormity of the effort it involved and the quantum of useful information it
provides. Let us ignore the shortcomings! You won't regret it when you buy
