Those of you who are seeing this for a second time, please pass it on.
-------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Dr. Vanguri Chitten Raju, story writer, actor, comedian, now publisher,...
of Houston has set up a foundation - Vanguri Foundation of America, and
has been promoting the Telugu short story for the past couple of years.
The Foundation has published two volumes, entitled "amerikA telugu
kathAnika". Some of you may have seen the second volume released at last
year's TANA at Chicago. BTW, Raju, father of two teenage children, in his
spare time looks after his other child, a Hydraulics Equipment Company
as a hobby.
In order to encourage writers in North America, the Foundation has
announced a contest for a short story, and poem (gEyam - annAru). There
will be two awards in each category, 1st Prize of $116 and a second
prize of $58.
Rules, Conditions, Regulations, and assorted Impediments:
o Stories not to exceed 10 letter size pages, in manuscript.
Poems not to exceed 2 such pages. (I think they rely on your
good judgment, not to write in super-small size handwriting)
o Only (hitherto) unpublished writings from residents of North
America (which is what? Mexico, US and Canada. Greenland,
El Salvador, etc... don't bother. There may be some kind of
official sanction against importing stories from Cuba.)
You may choose to remain anonymous, and/or sport a nom-de-plume,
but they need your real name, address, and a phone number.
(This is not an unreasonable requirement. I am told Ed McMahon
and Dick Clark require this kind of information, so that they
can deliver the ten million dollar grand prize, in the middle
of the Super Bowl game, on live TV)
(Of course, the question remains, what if something you wrote
a few months ago, was published in a local newsletter of limited
circulation?)
o The judging will be done anonymously (I mean, the Judges will
be public, but you shall remain anonymous to them) under
the leadership of Dr. Pemmaraju Venugopala Rao of Atlanta.
o Selected stories (not limited to the prize winners) will be
published in the third volume of "amerikA telugu kathAnika".
Poems would be published separately, in a first volume of
"amerikA telugu gEyam".
o We invite all writers in North America to participate in this
endeavour. Please spread the word to others you know, and
encourage them. (How do I do this, you may say. You could
invite them for dinner, to reduce their work. You can baby-sit
for them, do their shopping. Offer to "scribe" for them.
Use your imagination!)
o Last date for receipt of entries: dhAta nAma samvatsara,
ugAdi, March 20, 1996 (which would mean it is Suddha pAdyami.
The calendar says it is the first day of Spring.)
Please mail your entries to:
