Yes, I can hear the "Oh no, not again" s loud and clear. And I
do understand your point about keeping telusaa free of such
topics not directly related to telusaa charter. But folks, here's
my one more appeal. Please read and give it some thought.
SCIT, the modem that played a pivotal role in many of our
friendships and aquaintences needs our help. Telusaa members
tried (a few weeks ago) to put some life back into SCIT by
crossposting their wonderful, thought provoking literary
articles on SCIT. But it didn't work: not because there weren't
enough posts from telusaa to SCIT but because of the deluge
of totally unrelated articles on SCIT: mostly CROSSPOSTS from
other newsgroups. The contents of these posts do not have
even 1% relevance to the contents of the charter of SCIT.
In most cases these are from 2-3 individuals who have made it
clear that they intend to crosspost these articles, come what
may. We are left with only one choice: to find a way to avoid
these posts.
The only choice left for us is a moderated SCIT. Wait a sec,
moderation NOT in the CONTENTS of the post, but moderation
only as far as the newsgroups crossposting is concerned.
That is, no crossposting will be allowed on SCIT. All that the
moderator will be looking for is the number of newsgroups
in the header line and if it is more than one, the post
will be rejected. Since this kind of moderation is very
very simple, we'll be using an AUTO-Moderation scheme
wherein a software will do this job for us.
The advantages are numerous and quite evident. The one valid
disadvantage is that in doing this kind of moderation, we'll
be eliminating genuine crossposting like the one related to
similarities between telugu-sinhalese scripts, But considering
the fact that such an occurence is as rare as a sunny day
in syracuse in january, we can ignore it for the moment and
hope that people really interested in such topics will post
to the concerned newsgroups separately.
We'll be posting a Request for Discussion (RFD) on SCIT soon.
We'll then have 21 days to discuss the issue after which a
Call for Votes (CFV) is sent out. At the end of the voting
period, we need atleast 100 more YES votes than NO votes
AND 2/3 of the entire votes to be YES, for the newsgroup to
be changed to a moderated one.
With a membership as large as telusaas, we can make this happen
without any problems at all. This is a sincere appeal to all
telusaa members to actively participate in the RFD (on SCIT)
and needless to say, in the voting too.
All of us would like to see SCIT back to its glorious days.
Let us try and see to it that this happens.
Kamala, Ramana, Sitaramayya, Suresh.
