yesterday, i came across another story by mAshTAru,
titled "No Room" in a kathala samkalanam compiled
by vAkATi and purANa pamDa. i really liked the
story. i am not an ardent reader of stories, but
i still remember the nice short stories of O.Henry
i read at my school. two stories recently captured
my attention. one was "prayOgam" by vOlgA - a story
about the failure of marriage system in middle class
india. this didn't seem to be a multi-layered story
to my uninitiated looks, but seemed to point to the
right factors which led to the degradation of the
system. the whole story seems to appeal to the
the reader at a conscious level. the second one
is mAshTAri story. this surely is a multi-layered
story, taking different meanings as one reads it
again and again. what struck me was the ease with
which mAshTAru portrayed the subtleties of lower class
indian life. any one who read any of these stories to
share their viewpoints too?
