kandam is such a lovely metre ... it is entirely like maatraa baddha
modern poetry in that all the gaNas used in it are of four maatraas.
UU ... UII ... IUI ... IIU ... IIII ...
(remember a guruvu is of two maatraas, while a laghuvu is one maatra)
That is, if you replace any guruvu by two laghuvus you are alright as
far as gaNaas go. (But you have some additional restrictions like last
gaNam in the long lines must be a guruvu and odd gaNam must not be a
IUI ja gaNam, which restrict this conversion.)
But if one is familiar with a lot of kanda padyaas then one need not even
know these rules ... a poem flows by itself and will follow the rules if
you stick to the more common kanda styles ...
kandam nakentO ish

Tanduku anduku naakaa
nandamu kandamlo kavitalanTE telusA !!
kavitalandina
An effort was made to avoid prosaic poetic words in this small poem.
I hope this is close to vAduka bhaasha as I intended it to be.
Comments are welcome.
