I agree. The story is totally horrible. What I find most objectionable 
about this story is that it belittles ambition and the desire to better 
one's lot. 

I remember reading an interesting theory by David Mclelland, an American 
Sociologist. His theory is that a society's ability to excel in all 
spheres is directly correlated to the extent to which that society's 
literature - especially children's literature - encourages achievement 
and extols the virtue of ambition. I think his theory was called the 
"need for achievement" theory.
