for Telugu
Update:
Rangavalli-1.2 replaces Rangavalli-1.1 as of Oct 27, 1997. If you have
downloaded Rangavalli before this
date, it is recommended that you download the new version for increased
functionality.
Major changes from Rangavalli-1.1:
Enhanced ease (believe me! it is now really easy) of installation
and use
Support for Tikkana (rehashed Potana) fonts
Addition of send mail capabilities
Run-time extendibility to use fonts other than TeluguLipi and
Potana
Major Changes from MeghaSandesam-1.0
You can now send mail in RTS format, not just read them
Preferences menu to configure just once in a lifetime
For further details, read Readme, Rangavalli-1.2 FAQ, MeghaSandesam-1.1
FAQ files.
Rangavalli-1.2 is a java based visual plain-text editor/web
browser/e-mail tool for telugu. It is loosely based
on the Rice Transliteration Scheme (RTS). The editor converts on the
fly, RTS text typed by the user and
displays it using a platform dependent font. It can also be used to
download and read .rts documents from
the World Wide Web. Here is the FAQ on Rangavalli-1.2
MeghaSandesam-1.1 leverages Rangavalli-1.2 functionality to read and
send e-mails that are typed using
RTS scheme in telugu. Here is the FAQ on MeghaSandesam-1.1
Except for the fonts, the entire program is portable to all platforms
for which Java1.1 VM is available. In fact,
Rangavalli-1.2 can be extended at runtime to use fonts that have not
been supplied with Rangavalli-1.2. To
do so, the user needs to write a simple class file that implements the
Telugu.Mappings.TeluguFontMap
interface. See FAQ for further details.
At this time, Rangavalli-1.2 and MeghaSandesam-1.1 have been configured
to work with True-Type
Fonts on Windows NT/95. Work is on to release font configured versions
for Linux. At present, there is no
Java1.1 VM that works on Mac. It is expected sometime by the end of
1997. Once the VM becomes
available, i will release font-configured versions for Mac too.
Requirements:
1.1.3 or later versions of a Java VM (e.g. Sun's JDK or JRE). Click
here to download the latest
version of JDK/JRE.
A telugu-font that has been mapped by a class file that implements
the
Telugu.Mappings.TeluguFontMap interface. At this time, TeluguLipi
Fonts of Sri Srinivas Sirigina,
Potana fonts of Sri T. Desikacary and Tikkana Fonts (rehashed
Potana fonts) by Sri Juvvadi
Ramana have been mapped for Rangavalli.
Caution: For copyright issues with regards to fonts, contact the
respective authors. Copies
included with Rangavalli are for demonstration purposes only.
Differences with RIT:
No % comments or macros allowed.
Sunna can only be obtained with M e.g. gAMdhi would work, gAndhi
wouldn't.
Bcos of unicode treating ksha as k with sha vottu, x is no longer
considered as ksh
No telugu digits.
Before downloading, note that Rangavalli comes with no warranty and is
free for non-commercial uses
only. ALL EXPRESS OR IMPLIED REPRESENTATIONS AND WARRANTIES ARE HEREBY
EXCLUDED.
