I admit that I don't have authoritative references on this, but to me
it seems that "nela=moon" is a good fit. nela=light to light-of-moon,
therefore= moon by suggestion, hence = month by idiom seems to be
a longer, more complicated etymological route than simply to note that
the natural basis of month in a calendar is the phases of the moon (English
"month" is also from moon, the stylized phrase "many moons ago" is
also common).
Also, in adjectival phrases like "nela-vanka" nela is a direct,
drop-in synonym for "chandra".
Incidentally, I believe that the corresponding pureTelugu word for sun
is "poddu."
While on etymology, here are a couple of fun, pseudoetymologies that "prove"
a relationship between English and Telugu--
vEkuva related to "wake [up in the morning]"
(and vEkuva jaamu = the jam one has with breakfast after one
wakes up in the morning :-) :-))
kaapu related to cop, kaacu vaaDu.
:-)
