Even I wondered about this always. What is the
criteria ?

In his preface to EMESCO's Manucaritram,
Viswanatha says epics like bhaaratam and
raamaayaNam may enrich your knowledge about vedic
traditions but not telugu language. If one has not
read manucaritram, he says, one cannot claim to
know telugu well.

This is a clear distinction, BUT isn't
manucaritram highly sanscritized also ?
