One prose writer that I like a lot is YarramseTTi saayi. I have read a few
of his satirical essays (they were probably reprinted newspaper
columns). He is very funny, and does a remarkable job of portraying
urban middle-class life. To a purist, his stuff may be closer to
journalism than literature, but if the definition of literature is
"writing that reflects the life of a people", then I would definitely
include him in my personal 12-step Telugu lit. program.
To the novice, Y.S.'s writing has the advantage that it is very easy
to read and unpretentious but deep.
