Yes. Some more enthusiastic hands are badly needed for future software
development.
I was about to write a manifesto for 'lEkha'. That got postponed
because I had to go to India suddenly and I just got back. I sent a
preliminary version of the manifesto of 'lipi' sometime ago to some members in
this mailing list. I decided to change the name from 'lipi' to 'lEkha' to
avoid confusion with a project done by CMC ten years ago.
Here are the salient features planned for 'lEkha'
Support for multiple transliteration schemes like
rachana, itrans etc
Support for emacs so that editing, news and mail reading
can be done in wysiwig manner
A word processor so that people don't have to learn TeX/LaTeX
Better support for reading Indian languages on the Web
Modularisation of the code so that different programmers
can work according to their own taste
Spellcheckers for Indian languages
Central to all this is a representation scheme for Indian languages.
I was thinking of ISCII but I was not successful in
getting any documentation on that.
As an aside I saw Anu fonts for Mac when I went to India. The fonts are really
impressive. I would like to provide support for them in RIT but I wasn't
successful in transferring the fonts to unix side. If there is anybody on
this group who can do this let me know.
