I think there are important fundamental differences in
the natures of Telusa and scit, that go beyond just the number
of people having (first-hand) access to one's writing.

Telusa is like a club in many respects. In some sense, I have an introduction
to almost all the members of the club, from people that I have known
and corresponded with. They are all, loosely speaking, kindred spirits, with
a well-focussed common purpose. Thus, the atmosphere is more tolerant and
supportive in nature. Even if I say something foolish, I have some degree
of confidence that people will understand that it is a natural part of the
endeavor of learning about something.

scit is the "real world." There are all sorts of people out there, populating
an open virtual marketplace. I have no business to expect that anyone there
will be friendly or supportive (if some are, well and good.) of my views
and endeavors. As Chuq von Rospach (the original author of the netiquette
document) said, I have to be aware that present, past and future employers,
colleagues etc. might be reading my outpourings there. I should be aware
that I could very well be making a fool of myself in front of all these
people. All usenet articles are now accessible to anyone doing a search
using dejanews.

In reality, I am not this calculating or paranoid when writing on
either usenet or Telusa. I try to exercise decent restraint in my
style, but beyond that, I express my views as candidly as I can and
let matters take their course.

However, when the question of autocopying telusa to scit comes up, it
naturally brings the differences between the two fora into focus.

I don't know enough about listserv to say whether it is possible to have
a simple mechanism to enable autocopy by a writer at the time of mailing.
There's the issue of the writer autocopying quoted material by
others as a part of his article, but if we ignore this problem for the
time being, it would be possible for me to copy this article to scit
by cc-ing it to the UT or Berkeley or some other mail-to-usenet gateway.
Or I can forward it when I receive it from the listserver, if I forgot
to cc- it at the time of initially sending it. This is very simple, if
we can get around the problem of sending quoted text along with the
article.
