Yes, the English word "Folk Music" comes from German "Volksmusik". Many of
you may remember the meanwhile famous slogan at the fall of Berlin Wall
"Wir sind das Volk" (=we are the folk).

> 3) Vetoori Prabhakarasastri : Chatupadya Manimamjari
deepaala picchayyaSaastri's _chaaTupadya ratnaakaramu_ is equally famous
work. Then there is _telugu chaaTu kavitwamu_ (apparently a Ph.D thesis, but
expanded) by G. lalita

> 4) Hari Adiseshuvu : Janapada Vangmaya Parichayamu
This one and Prof. S.V. jOgaaraavu's "yaxagaana ....." were published in
late 50s/early 60s. Has anyone seen them in recent years in book shops? I
have seen mikkilinEni raadhaakRshNamoorti's _jaanapada kaLaaroopaalu_ in
bookshops a year ago. Then there is an another, old book _palle padaalu_ from
50s.

> 28) Tekumalla Acyutarao : Andhra Padamulu - Patalu (1916-17)
> Krishna Patrika

That brings back old memories from records collecting days. He, along with
daasari kOTiratnam, tungala chalapatiraavu (the later 2 became legendary in
Telugu speaking area through "mailavarapu samaajam" playing kRshNa,
sakkubaayi roles.....), also add names like Sivaraavu, bandaa
kanakalingESwararaavu, ...... cut many discs in early/mid 30s. Oh, also
include the "pitaamaha" valloori jagannaatham (seeta & anasooyala
guruvugaaru!). valloori was recorded way back in 20s. The famous "Eruvaaka
saagaarOy .." song was recorded by him, and later the film MD, producers were
dragged to court by HMV for plagiarism. Its not the forum, to discuss films,
and music, so I stop here.

> 52) Mikkilineni Radhakrishna : Andhra Natakaranga Caritra (1969)
I highly recommend this book.

> 58) Prayaga Narasimha Sastri : Telugu Palle Patalu (40 of those)
> (Kavita Publications, 1960)
This is one more name, who tried to popularize the folk songs through films.
Many of you have probably heard this tatwam:

gooTilO chilakEdiraa Orannaa gooDu chinnabOyeraa!
kOTadaaTi pETadaaTi oorudaaTi ErudaaTi
gooTilOna raamachiluka guTTala paalaayeranaa ...!

and "okarini naanavEsaan okarini chituka goTTaan ...." were adopted by him in
films and on non-film records.

> 62) B. Subbarayan : Worked in Telugu Bhasha Samiti.
> Recorded janapada songs which last for 40 hours.
Is n't it buDugu subbaraayan, associated with "pillala kaaryakramaalu" (the
other two prominent personolties were: akkayya, annayya: nyaayapati
raaghavaraavu, kaamESwari.). I know a couple of children books from
Subbarayan. kOvelapaaTi sooryaprakaaSaraavu (K.S.P) made a film
"baalaanandam" in 1954, with story and lyrics from nyaayapati.

> 67) Music In Telugu Folk Songs : V. Seeta Devi
This was the book I was refering to before.

There are a couple of more thesis works.

One more correction to my yesterday's posting:

> I have two of the following three songs (sung by Vinjamoori sisters).
> > 1) RaaRaa kumaara naluguku
> > 2) Chitha Chittha Vaana kurise chitthaa vaanaa kurise
> > 3) Naa chitti thallee nidurapovamma
The song two I have is NOT from Vinjamuri sisters, but AIR-Vijayawada
choir.

Let me end with one of my favourite songs. This is on "railu banDi". Author:
there is none! Inspiration: when the folk saw the train for the first time.
