By convention, I thought SamudruDu was male. So, wherefore the "talli?"

This is a good doubt.

See, lakshmii, chandruDu, and dhanvantari ( and apsarasa gaNam except
oorvaSi ) are born from the ksheera samudram when gods and demons have
churned it for the nector.

So, they are `single parant' children. The parant is the father and
mother for them.

Yes. By convention, SamudruDu was male. ( ex. "lakshmeem ksheera
samudra raaja tanayaam Sree ranga dhaaamEswareem..." ). But poets
are `nirankuSaa's. And we can not do much about it.

In a kaavya, it will be taken as a `duranvaya'; meaning bad application.
But in chaaTu poems, which were never given the elevated status of a
kavya ( irrespective of the mummaTa's saying "vaakyam rasaatmakam
kaavyam".) often get away with such errors. Chaatu poems even getaway
with gramatical mistakes!
