namastE!

Thanks pAlanagAru for the info on HAIKU. A small question/doubt.

I remember one of my friends telling me (when I asked him the meaning of
HAIKU which I read it for the first time from 'Vimal Sarees' Ad a few
years ago) that HAIKU was a modern shortened form of much older but
similar japanese verse called TANKA (or TONKA) of 5 linese (contaning
5-7-5-7-7 syllables, if I am not wrong). Any more info on this and on
the relation between HAIKU and TANKA?

And also, are HAIKUs restricted to be written describing only the nature
and the like?
