haiku padyaalu are simple in meter and at the same time profound. They
have a mystic quality. We were so emboldened by the simplicity, we
would gather on a friday night and hold a "haiku gOshThi". (But, I would
now stick with my export policy. I would rather write a kandam in
Japanese.)
My friend from maharashtra told me that he knew about haiku while in
India. It seems maraaThi literature has experimented with it.
I am not too sure, but I dont think haiku has any word limit like the
tirukkural of avvayyar.
Come to think of it, if you exclude the fourth line in Vemana padyam, it is
a beauty in brevity. The first two lines propose a theme, and the third line
resolves it.
