One hears many apocryphal stories like this about well known
personalities. Some of these do not pan out to be true when closely
examined or checked.
For the above story to be true, it would have needed not only G's
doDDa hRUdayam, but also an understanding director as well and a
neutral lyric that did not make a difference which character on screen
sang what part of it. Secondly, in those days, songs were sung several
times in rehearsal before the actual recording and several 'takes' would
be expected for each song. So, the mistake should have happened at the
first or second rehearsal and then it should have been allowed to continue
till the end.
